An important skill everyone who uses a computer today needs to have is how to detect spyware on your computer. Spyware is one type of software program known generally as malware. Malware includes viruses, Trojan Horses, dialers, hijackers, and many other variations.

Specifically, spyware does what its name implies – it gathers information from your computer, which it may then transmit to a predetermined site where that information can be put to illegal uses.

While there are sometimes overt clues to the presence of spyware on your computer, such as your browser forwarding you to a website that you did not select, or excessive CPU (central processing unit) usage, the most reliable method is to install an anti-spyware program.

There are several anti spyware programs available for purchase that will allow you to eliminate spyware from your PC. There are also several that are available as freeware. Because of the hundreds upon hundreds of types of spyware in Cyberspace, it is advisable to make use of at least two different anti-spyware programs for detection and removal. Since no one program is likely to have profiles for every type of spyware, using more than one method increases the odds of detection.

Once you have selected an installed the program, it is generally advisable to close all other programs to allow the anti-spyware program to scan all of the files on your computer. If a program, such as a word processor, is running when the scan is being performed, any files in use by the word processor may not be able to be cleaned of the Spyware. If the detection program alerts you to any unauthorized programs, you will have the opportunity to select “eliminate spyware”, or some similar language.

It may be desirable to reboot your PC in Safe Mode, if you are using the Windows operating system, before scanning. This will limit the number of system files that are in use. Consult the instructions regarding this in the anti-spyware software you choose.

It is possible to inadvertently download malware from any site that has been compromised. Even major, reputable sites can be infected by a hacker.

Remember, rule #1 for detecting spyware is to always scan your PC on a regular basis, at least weekly, and keep your anti-spyware program files updated by checking for updates at least every other week. Also, it is advisable to have an additional anti-virus program installed on your PC, preferably one that includes a Firewall. The more protection you have on your PC, the better
