MSI Wind U100 Netbook Review

At the size of a large paperback book, this MSI netbook is light, portable, and surprisingly feature-packed for its price range. With its 10 inches diagonal screen, it comes in just small enough to be considered a netbook, though with a keyboard almost the size of a normal laptop’s, and decent specs, many casual computer users would probably be satisfied using only the MSI Wind.

All modern, non-gaming programs should run on it just fine, though constantly running a program that is resource-intensive will drain the MSI’s otherwise exceptional battery life of around 10 hours. For the most part, to get the excellent battery life you should keep all the default settings as they come, but there is a lot of flexibility to increase performance, brighten the screen, and so on, if you are willing to lose some of the battery’s lifespan.

The default specs are impressive when compared to otherwise similar netbooks: 160GB is more than enough for the needs of most netbook users, 1GB that is expandable to 2GB with another 1GB stick, and a 1.6GHz Atom processor from Intel (the same processor that most other netbook models use) though the MSI Wind’s can be overclocked fairly safely by almost 25%.

Video quality is decent, and you should be able to watch all of your movies and play most mid-range games and lower on the low to default settings just fine.

This MSI netbook model comes in both white and black – I personally prefer the white netbook model, but the power cord is black for both of them, so it doesn’t really match the white netbook  and looks a little odd.

If you’re thinking of buying this netbook as a present for someone not very tech-savvy, you might want to take an hour or so and strip out the bloatware that comes pre-packed with the MSI Wind, involving mostly trial versions of products you will probably never use.
